Product Recovery
Aluminum and steel, by their very nature, can be recycled at high effectiveness and can be repeatedly reused to form new consumer packaging with no degradation in performance, quality, or safety. We are focused on helping consumers understand that with metal packaging, every can that is recovered is able to and will be transformed into another product. If consumers can support more successful steel and aluminum recovery, they can have a tremendous impact on resource preservation and reuse.
As part of our 2030 sustainability goals, we are building on this strong foundation and working with industry associations to drive recycling rates higher and higher. We partnered with the Can Manufacturers Institute and The Recycling Partnership in the U.S. to fund aluminum beverage can recycling grants for Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).
The grant program will help MRFs invest in aluminum can capture equipment that makes the recovery of used beverage cans (UBCs)—the most valuable commodity in the residential recycling stream and the largest revenue-driver for MRFs—more efficient and effective. With up to one in four beverage cans missorted at a typical MRF, their capture will provide critical revenue to the U.S. recycling system and allow additional aluminum to be recycled into new cans or other useful, recyclable products ().
